Description
The Great Black Wasp, Sphex pensylvanicus, is a digger wasp common in North America. It's a pollinator, and also known for attacking and paralyzing other insects which it then feeds to its larvae. Despite its large size and intimidating appearance, it's not agressive and not likely to sting humans, as it's solitary and has no colony to defend. In the sunlight it has beautiful blue highlights. This one is on a Rattlesnake Master - Eryngium yuccifolium - in Minnesota.
