A queen Brown Belted bumblebee, Bombus griseocollis, on Butterfly Weed, Asclepias, also known as Swamp Milkweed. Queens are the only ones to survive the winter; they emerge in the spring and start foraging in preparation to begin a new colony. While consuming the sweet stuff offered by the flowers, she picks up sticky gold pollen and transfers it from plant to plant.
